How to Turn Ashes Into Diamonds

How to submit ashes to EverDear™ laboratory

How to Submit Ashes to Our Laboratory

To make a cremation diamond up to 0.30 carats, the amount of ashes needed is generally a volume of ⅓ cup, which equals 5⅓ tbsp or about 2 ounces (50 grams). After your order is confirmed, please ensure that the ashes are packed and tightly sealed in a suitable container (e.g., a zip-lock bag or Tupperware) and sent to the address provided by us. Once our lab receives the ashes, our experts will start the purification process.

Extract Carbon from Ashes

Turning ashes into diamonds is a process where diamonds are made of carbon extracted from cremated ashes. Approximately 18.5% of the carbon element is burned during the cremation process, and only 0.5-4% of the calcium carbonate remains in the bones. The binding strength of calcium carbonate is often more important than the carbon found in muscle tissue. Bone also acts as insulation, protecting the carbon in the bone marrow and other tissues.

In the EverDear™ laboratory, cremated ashes must reach a very high purity level according to jewellery standards. Different treatments of cremation diamonds result in different colours. All the ashes of EverDear™ received are heated in a vacuum and purified through various refining processes to generate the colours required.

Due to the presence of nitrogen in the ashes, the cremation diamonds naturally appear yellow. After nitrogen purification, the cremated diamond appears blue since they contain boron. The completely purified ashes will produce colourless diamonds and emit a pure aura. The carbon content of each person's ashes is different, so everyone's diamond is unique.

Ashes grow into raw diamond

Ashes Grow into Raw Diamond

High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) process is one of the cutting-edge methods for making diamonds from ashes. Natural diamonds are formed when carbon is exposed to extremely high pressure and high temperature under Earth's crust. HPHT devices are used to simulate this natural environment.

In this environment, the carbon in the ashes is pressed and turned into beautiful lab-grown cremation diamonds. The interior of the HPHT device is heated to over 2000°F to melt the catalyst metal. The molten catalyst metal dissolves a high-purity personal carbon source, which is then transported into a tiny diamond seed and crystallised. The diamond seed begins to grow like a shining star and eventually becomes a genuine raw diamond.

Customization of a memorial diamond made from ashes

Customise a Unique Cremation Diamond

The technology of turning cremated ashes into diamonds forms a raw, uncut diamond that does not directly exhibit its natural beauty and brilliance. Our experts will use the most advanced tools and craftsmanship to polish and cut the cremation diamond to reveal its true luster and ensure maximum weights, high clarity, and optimal proportions for different diamond shapes.

The unique cut and colour of your cremation diamond only tell a snippet of your deceased loved one's story. The girdle, or edge of the memorial diamond, can be engraved with a name or a loving message for the departed loved one as an everlasting tribute. EverDear™'s cremation diamonds colour choices are yellow, blue, and colourless, and our ashes into diamond sizes range from 0.1 carats to 2.29 carats. A brilliant cut is always highly recommended as it maximises the brilliance and beauty of the diamond. However, if you desire a different cut excluded from our current options, we gladly accept customisation.

Ashes into diamonds are real diamonds

Cremation Diamonds are Real Diamonds That Can Be Passed on to the Next Generation

Lab-grown diamonds made from ashes are tested genuine by a diamond tester because they're made of crystallised carbon, just like mined diamonds. Both lab-grown diamonds and mined diamonds have the same chemical, optical, and physical properties. Natural diamonds are created under the earth's crust over millions of years, then they are mined, cut, and polished. Lab-grown diamonds are made under conditions (pressure and temperature) similar to nature in a controlled laboratory environment where the diamond growing time is reduced to only a few months. They are also real diamonds.

EverDear™️ turns ashes or hair into blue diamonds in memory of beloved ones

Cost-Effective and Environment-Friendly

Lab-grown diamonds are more sustainable and environmental-friendly than natural diamonds. In the case of lab-created diamonds, the process that takes billions of years and requires immense natural pressure is mimicked in labs in a matter of weeks. That is why lab-created diamonds are rising in popularity in the United States and worldwide, making up a small but steadily growing portion of the diamond trade at 4 to 6%. They are now recommended to eco-conscious and price-sensitive consumers as a mined diamond alternative.

Turning Ashes into Diamonds VS. Other Types of Burials

Ashes into Diamonds VS. Traditional Burial

1. Ashes into Diamonds VS. Traditional Burial

The average cost of a traditional North American funeral is between $7,000 and $10,000 (price in 2021, including services of the funeral home, burial in a cemetery, and the installation of a headstone). In comparison, the prices of ashes into diamonds start at $ 895 for a 0.1ct yellow diamond at EverDear™. Advancements in science and technology enable EverDear™ to bring down the costs of turning ashes into diamonds while offering more families bigger and better-quality memorial diamonds.

Every memorial diamond is a symbol of the uniqueness of the deceased. Turning ashes into diamonds is the process of preserving your love eternally.

Ashes into Diamonds VS. Scatter Ashes

2. Ashes into Diamonds VS. Scatter Ashes

Scattering ashes involves releasing them outside, where the ashes decompose and become part of nature. Grieving families can choose to scatter the ashes at home, in a cemetery, in waterways, or other places of meaning. Selecting a proper location to scatter the ashes can be challenging. Moreover, you should know in advance if your state and federal laws allow you to do so. All of these may restrict your choices.

However, turning the cremation ashes into a beautiful diamond means you don't need to worry about these restrictions. In addition, with a cremation diamond, you can keep a long-lasting connection with your loved one.

Ashes into Diamonds VS. Urn at Home

3. Ashes into Diamonds VS. Urn at Home

For the bereaved, keeping ashes in an urn at home can be a way to maintain the feeling of connection with the deceased after they’ve gone. Nonetheless, turning ashes into diamonds still has the edge over an urn at home, as it allows the surviving family to feel close to the people who passed away by carrying them with you wherever you go, at any time.

Gazing at the shiny cremation diamond is like seeing the twinkle in a departed loved one’s eyes. The memorial diamond made from ashes can be set into a unique and beautiful piece of jewellery, which stays with you for the rest of your life. It could also become a family treasure passed on from generation to generation.

FAQs about Turning Ashes into Diamonds

  • Taking some time to consider what to do with your loved one's ashes helps you gain peace after the death of someone you love. While many people choose to bury their loved ones in a cemetery, place the cremated ashes in a traditional urn, or scatter the ashes in a meaningful place, these options may not be attractive to you. Through exploring what makes your loved one distinct, you can create a personal and customized memorial tribute to avoid having to say goodbye. Creating a customized memento can turn your loved one's cremated remains into a legacy.

EverDear™ can create shiny, everlasting diamonds from your loved one's cremated ashes and turn them into unique memorial jewelry. You can keep a part of the departed person always by your side and remember the joyful moments you shared with him or her in the form of a memorial diamond. Turning ashes into a memorial diamond allows the story of your loved one to live on forever and be passed down to the next generations.

  • Turning cremated ashes into diamonds is actually using the carbon extracted from the ashes to create diamonds in a lab environment. After memorial, the body of an adult human being leaves about 1.8 to 2.7 kg of ashes (about 9.4 cups). The cremated ashes contain approximately 0.5 to 4 percent carbon.

Normally, it takes about two-thirds of a cup of ashes to make a 0.1-carat diamond. At EverDear, to produce a 1 carat diamond, 100 grams of ashes is needed. More ashes will be needed if you want to create diamonds in larger sizes or make multiple diamonds.

Theoretically, it is possible to turn the ashes of one person into nearly 14 diamonds of 0.1-carat. Hair is a more efficient source of carbon than cremated ashes. You can increase this efficiency by preserving the hair before memorial. As a result, Everdear can offer you 1 diamond as large as 2.29 carats or in sets of 2 to 4 diamonds (discounted family plans).

Please note that we are using the original mass of the human body to estimate the weight of the cremated ashes. The weight of the ashes is mainly based on the weight of the bones in the body. So the height will have a larger effect on this average value than the body weight.

  • Lab-grown diamonds grown from ashes are virtually identical to naturally mined diamonds; they are both created in the same way. Under high pressure and high temperature, the carbon atoms will form into special "diamond metrics" to create ultra-durable diamonds. The only difference is that a cremated diamond is converted in a laboratory from the ashes of a loved one, while a mined diamond is formed from natural carbon in the Earth's environment over billions of years.

To make a diamond from ashes, a laboratory specialist will first perform a detailed chemical analysis of the ashes you provide and extract the carbon from them. The carbon purified from the ashes is then placed into a sophisticated machine that simulates the environment deep within the Earth's crust, creating the extremely high temperatures and pressures needed to turn the carbon into diamonds.

The high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) conditions used to turn ashes into diamonds require temperatures of up to 2,500°C and pressures of up to 60,000 atmospheres. After several weeks of exposure to these extreme conditions, your unique memorial diamond is born.

  • The cost for turning cremated ashes or hair into diamonds is less expensive than the cost of a traditional burial, along with the care of the grave. The cost to turn your loved one’s ashes into a diamond depends on the color and cut of the diamond you want. However, the carat weight plays one of the most important roles in determining the price of a lab-grown diamond.

It is certain that the bigger the diamond you want to turn ashes into, the more it will cost. When the carat weight crosses a certain line, the increase in price may become significant. For example, despite the only slight increase in carat weight, a 1-carat diamond can be 10-20% more expensive than a 0.9-carat diamond.

Meanwhile, the vendor you choose to buy a diamond from is also an important factor that greatly affects the price. EverDear provides our customers with the most affordable price in the market and charges only $695 for a 0.1-carat yellow diamond. If you order multiple diamonds at the same time, we even offer you a special discount. If you are interested in turning your loved one’s ashes into diamonds but are limited by a tight budget, EverDear, with the best price worldwide, will be your ideal choice. You can check our price list for more details.

  • Carbon is the fundamental component of life, and everything that is alive is made of carbon, including your pet. Since diamonds are entirely constructed of carbon, and all living creatures contain copious amounts of carbon, it is possible to create diamonds from animal ashes. All pet ashes can be turned into diamonds, whether your beloved animal is a cat, dog, horse, or even a pet parrot. EverDear can make them into shining diamonds to keep you company forever.

Making a diamond out of your pet's ashes will allow your pet to participate in the rest of your life so they never miss a moment. By wearing a memorial diamond from ashes, you can always share the memory of your loving pet with those around you.
